Using my magic to find the glitter
Walking, as metaphor and action, is a core part of my practice. It was instilled in me by my grandparents, who would often take me and my sister on walks or “treasure hunts” in the desert around their house in southern New Mexico. They taught me to look for beauty, for the “glitter.” Works in progress are regarded as “ongoing journeys.”
Noah S. Thompson is an image maker and storyteller inspired by the mythologies ascribed to landscapes, examining rituals and relics of memory-keeping such as gardens, cemeteries, and personal archives. Their work, informed by a sense of wonder and melancholy, uses the alchemical nature of photography to explore themes of transformation and belonging.
Noah was raised in Oregon and New Mexico. He received an M.F.A. in Studio Art from the University of Connecticut and a dual B.A. in English and Art & Art History from Dickinson College. Recent exhibition venues include the Griffin Museum of Photography, Hampden Gallery, Distillery Gallery, William Benton Museum of Art, Alexey von Schlippe Gallery, and the Mattatuck Museum of Art & History. Their work has been supported by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Ford/Knauth Fellowship for LGBTQIA+ Artists at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and a UConn Zachs Award.
